here I go again

And now for something completely different. Or maybe not so completely. Anyway... here's a very brief and totally subjective introduction to Polish rock music. Of the progressive/goth/darkwave variety. Just because I can (and because I want to store the links to those few videos here for unlimited future viewing).

The first song is old, and has immense sentimental value for me, in addition to being gorgeous. It's been with me through some major emotional ups & downs I went through as long ago as my early twenties.:) The band is called Collage, and they've been dubbed 'Polish Genesis'. Though I personally think that 'Polish Marillion' suits them just as fine.;) If those names mean anything to you, that is - but if they don't, you're probably not reading this anyway. So, without further babble, here is one of my absolute all-time favorites - Living in the Moonlight (YouTube says: "embedding disabled by request", so all I can do is provide the link):

Now, this next video is by Closterkeller, who are probably THE most famous Polish goth rock band. Still very much in business, though I don't follow them as closely now as I did in the past. Anyway... the lead singer Anja Orthodox has a lot of charisma, a mighty voice, and writes some pretty good lyrics too (she sings mostly in Polish, though). The song below is called Na krawedzi (On the edge).

And another similar band - Moonlight (usually labelled as 'darkwave' or 'black metal', though both terms can be confusing). Again, a charismatic female lead singer, thoughtful lyrics and very evocative music. The song below is called List z raju (A Letter from Paradise).

And here is my own humble translation of the lyrics:

whom can I tell if not you
my friend, what's going on in paradise
something happened - not even God knows what
it came suddenly - and there's nothing left

someone burned the gardens of our dreams
tore out the roots of our fantasies
the trampled flowers of our delights
wither alone

I have said, 'it cannot be'
but it didn't help, my friend
it didn't help

nothing is like you remember
the sun over paradise is fading
save, my friend, whatever can still be saved

I have said, 'it cannot be'
but it didn't help, my friend
it didn't help...

And now it's time for me to shut up and get ready for bed.:(
