the nightmare is over
So, the plumber DID show up today. Around 5:30 p.m.:/ When I called the building management office in the morning, they said they had someone scheduled to come here TOMORROW. Yes, tomorrow. I was almost ready to scream, or burst out crying, when I heard that - and it must have shown in my voice, because the woman I talked to put me on hold for a few minutes, and then returned saying that someone will come this afternoon. Still, it was another day of waiting, another day off stress, since I didn't know what time he was going to arrive (if at all - I didn't have much reason to trust in whatever they said anymore, did I?...).
While I was waiting, my brother-in-law called me and said that he has a friend who works in building management, and that said friend explained to him how according to Chicago laws any maintenance problem reported by a tenant has to be fixed by the landlord within 72 hours - otherwise the tenant has a right to deduct $100 from his rent for each subsequent day during which the problem has not been taken care of. So I have sent an email to the rental company that owns my building, explaining the situation and informing them that I am going to deduct $300 from my rent for July. I will attach a copy of said email to my check, which goes to the building management company - so that they know I had notified the owner. According to my brother-in-law, it is THEM who might get in trouble if they demand I pay the full amount. So we'll see what happens...
I feel so worn out by this. You'd think staying home for three days in a row would be relaxing... but I am never fully relaxed when I am expecting someone, especially a total stranger, to pay me a visit at an unspecified time. I find it absolutely nerve-wracking. So now I feel woozy with relief and almost ready for bed...
Ahhh, the blissful peace and quiet. No more dripping and splashing sounds coming from the kitchen (the plumber also fixed the dripping kitchen faucet, which was quite noisy just by itself, and which had been contributing to the leaking pipe). Just the soft whirring of the fan. Very soothing...
Work will be busy tomorrow, but I am almost looking forward to it - since I will be actually getting something done, instead of waiting around biting my nails and emptying a bucket. Btw, the replacing of the old rusted pipe with a new one took the guy about two minutes. I can barely believe I had to wait 6 days for something so simple. I dread to think what will happen if there's a need for more complicated repairs... *shudder*
I think I wanted to talk about other stuff, but my brain is shutting down. Bedtime, then. *yaaaaawn*
