short A/L ficlet
This one started out as another drabble, but somehow swelled up to slightly over 500 words - so I guess it qualifies as a ficlet. Also, it's the first angsty thing I have ever written - in the fanfiction realm, at least. So bear with me.:)
Title: Discovery
Author: floatingleaf
Pairing: Aragorn/Legolas
Rating: PG-13
Summary: A private moment in Edoras. Eowyn's POV.
Warning: Angst!
Disclaimer: I'm sure Tolkien never meant to include this episode.;)
A/N: Dedicated to
romika - she will know why.:P
I had thought my only rival was the elven lady who had given him the lovely necklace he wears. I had felt guiltily relieved when he told me she was sailing to the Undying Lands - even though my heart ached to see his sorrow. I had hoped that there might come a time when he would let me help him forget her...
Alas! how short-lived that hope was... He might well miss his elven lady; he might even care for her just as well as he does for me... but it is not she who truly holds his heart. It is not she who ignites his passion - though now I almost wish it were so.
Yes, I saw them. After the feast tonight, when the elven prince had won his drinking game with the dwarf, Aragorn came up to him and offered help in leading him back to their sleeping quarters. The elf was barely affected by the drink, but he eagerly took Aragorn's arm nonetheless, leaning his head down to rest upon Aragorn's shoulder.
I was intrigued by this strange familiarity between them... so when they disappeared into the dimly lit corridor, I followed, walking as quietly as possible and keeping a safe distance.
As soon as they thought themselves alone, they turned to face each other, joining their mouths in a fervent kiss. And what a soul-sharing kiss it was! I had never beheld such passion. They clutched at each other desperately, fingers digging into the fabric of their clothes... they seemed to have no need of air to breathe for an incredibly long, suspended moment. They breathed each other. They were lost to the fire that consumed them, bodies pressed tightly together as though they struggled to become one. I didn't need to see more... I already knew what would happen as soon as they reach their guest chamber and close the door behind them. And I knew, deep in my heart, that this was not the first time it happened. It wasn't a passing infatuation or a base desire. It was love, devotion, worship. A full communion of souls and bodies, such as can only form between two warriors who trust each other with their very lives. A bond all the more powerful because they know they can lose each other tomorrow. All the more intense because even if they don't perish in battle, one will inevitably die, leaving the other to mourn and grieve for all eternity...
There was no place for me in this intimate moment. I tore my eyes away and withdrew quietly, blinded by shocked tears of pain and understanding. There was no future for me and Aragorn... but there was also no future for Aragorn and Legolas. All they had were these brief, stolen moments. A passion such as theirs would not be encouraged to come into the light...would not be accepted in someone who is meant to become king.
Suddenly my pain seems so small and unimportant. Just as my hope has been. Who can attain true happiness in times as dark as these? Love comes unbidden, bringing not joy, but anguish. Why should my selfish hopes be fulfilled, when the one I love is compelled to abandon all thought of personal gratification to follow his destiny? My heart is not the only one that lies broken upon his path to glory. There are quite a few... and they include his own.

Aye!
even if they don't perish in battle, one will inevitably die, leaving the other to mourn and grieve for all eternity
*nods* Oh I just remember, I have their future all planned before me, why don't I just get to writing it?! I thank you dearly. For the dedication- and for your injection of fuel so that I can take another step on the very stony and long and hard road that is the Sins. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Yes, I saw them.
It's so simple and it says so much.
they seemed to have no need of air to breathe for an incredibly long, suspended moment. They breathed each other.
That is just beautiful. Exquisite. *bliss*
It's such a beautiful, sad ficlet. It captures the reality of their relationship perfectly. It's not something I generally enjoy reading about because I believe in their forever, otherwise I just ache, but I loved this.

I am totally with you here. This is probably the first AND last angsty piece from me.:) It hurt to write it, and reading any A/L with a sad ending causes me almost physical pain (yeah, I am overemotional like that). By the way, the current fic challenge at Legolas_Aragorn_Slash, the Yahoo!Group I belong to, is to describe their final farewell - the moment of Aragorn's death. Of course I could not bring myself to take part in the challenge - just reading the fics is making me all teary, sniffy and achy inside... *sighs*

I don't mind some angst, so long as there's a happy ending. Real, sad fics, I just can't read. Character death? God no. I understand about it hurting. Oftentimes, I hurt when I'm writing something. And when I'm reading, when it's so real...oh, I ache. I like my A/L realistic but hopeful, you know? And I don't think you're overemotional. I'm the same way. Maybe it's just that we love the characters so much, and they're real to us.
And that challenge...I couldn't even read the fics. No way. That's just...wrenching.
*hugs*

Awww, thank you so much... *blushes*
And character death is a big no-no for me. I made an exception for Aragorn, since his death is canon after all - but I'd much rather read an AU where he is rewarded for his heroism by gaining immortality... Than they could love each other forever... *sighs*
