another week zipped by

So, what's new since last weekend? The weather has warmed up... then cooled down again. From a sleeveless top to a sweater and a jacket - all within the space of two days. And by next week, it's supposed to be hot again. All right. Whatever. *resigned headshake*

My knee is almost back to normal, but I seem to have developed some sort of digestive dysfunction. It's not really something I want to discuss in great detail - but lately some foods I used to eat with no problem mere months ago have been giving me a lot of discomfort. One of those foods, to my great disappointment, is yoghurt. I LOVE yoghurt. I used to have one almost every day at work, as a late afternoon snack. Well, in recent weeks, every time I had one, I would get horribly bloated and feel like I might explode. I tried to just ignore it for a while, but it became intolerable. So no more yoghurts for me.:/ Strangely enough, the same thing happened earlier with bananas. Again, I used to take them to work as convenient and healthy snacks - until my gut started going ballistic after I had one. What do bananas and yoghurts have in common?... Btw, other raw fruits don't bother me nearly as much, and I also seem to be perfectly fine with milk and cheese - so it's not lactose intolerance or some sensitivity to raw foods in general. I am fine with a lot of stuff that seems to bother other people - like beans, for example. Or asparagus and other high-fiber stuff. Which I eat pretty often, since it's good for me. But sometimes I add some perfectly innocent ingredient to a stew or a salad and end up in purgatory (quite literally, if you'll excuse the pun). And that annoys me, because it's just not fair. I mean, I'm not your average American junk food consumer. I try to eat healthy, most of the time. Those yoghurts that made me suffer were "all natural" and organic, by the way. So why is my body punishing me for eating right?... Is it just that I have inherited my dad's fragile digestive system that goes haywire at the slightest provocation? Funnily enough, my dad has been carefully watching what he eats for decades, and he's the one who suffers from various digestive ailments. My mom, on the other hand, could throw ANYTHING down her esophagus and come out unscathed (a theory which she continues to test on a daily basis). So it figures I would take after my dad, doesn't it?...:/ Anyway, I don't know if it's just a natural consequence of aging (for me, anyway), or if it means that some internal organ isn't functioning properly anymore and needs fixing. If it's the latter, then it must be something located pretty close to my waistline on the left side. That's where I had some pain yesterday, at any rate. Nothing too alarming, but it made walking unpleasant. The bad news is, I have no idea what caused it this time. I guess I just need to pay close attention to what I eat, any time of the day, and what happens afterwards - in order to eliminate all potential triggers. Or I could just, you know, go see a doctor. But I'm afraid I have read too many articles about the utterly corrupt and predatory US healthcare system, and I just don't trust doctors anymore.:/ Of course, if I am in a lot of pain, I will go - but I just want to sort of watch it for a while, see if there is a pattern...

Okay... that was the "whinging old lady" part of the post. In other news, I took next Monday off, since on Sunday I am going to visit my parents. And the Monday after that is also off, since it's Memorial Day. And the office will close early on the Friday before it, too. So it will be a nice long weekend. I should be able to finally clean this place (OMG the dust bunnies are eating me alive, I swear they are, it's a wonder my allergies haven't flared up yet), as well as do the laundry. Yes, I win at making exciting plans for long weekends. *snort*

Also, the 10TH ANNIVERSARY of starting this journal is coming up fast. What should I do to mark the occasion?... It's a momentous one, considering the amount of time I have spent here over the years. Any suggestions? :D

I got a bunch of food a friend didn't want anymore. Among it were a few bags of dried daikon radish. I read on the bag that daikon radish contains an enzyme that helps with digestion. I don't know if it would help you in your situation, but figured it was worth a mention.

That's interesting. Daikon radish has an incredibly sharp taste, though - I remember trying it once at a sushi restaurant and literally tearing up from the sting, LOL. You'd think something like that would irritate your stomach instead of soothing it... but I guess you never know. If bananas can hurt your intestines... *headshake*

Recently when I eat yoghurt I get an acidic stomach ... never had that before. It bothers me ... it really does!
