survivor syndrome?...

I feel so weird. I still can't quite believe that I'm not getting laid off. Not only because I had anticipated it for a few months, but because they did lay off a few people I would never have imagined I could possibly be chosen over, so to speak. I mean, I know it's about money, just like I said before - but still... The entire 'data operations' department (of which we are part) was pretty much cut in half. We had another meeting yesterday, just for those who are being retained - and I was shocked at how few of us there were. We all looked sort of wide-eyed and deflated, and the HR lady told us that we are suffering from the 'survivor syndrome' - feeling guilty about still having a job while others don't. That pretty much sums it up, I think. *nods*

Besides, I'm still at a loss about what to do with my vacation. I just thought about the annual Yaoi Con in San Francisco, which I attended last year - because there is always a chance someone I know might be there - but, unfortunately, it is only a month away, and the pre-registration is already closed, the convention hotel fully booked etc.etc.etc. Last year it happened in late October, and if that were the case now, I could still totally make it. But as it is, I don't think it makes much sense to go. I'm not a crazy enough fan to stand in line for hours in order to get my badge, lol. And I don't really know of any other fannish events this year that I could find of interest, or that any of my LJ friends will be attending. Of course, I can just spend my vacation at home - and that's probably what I will end up doing - but I could so use a change of scenery, for a few days at least... *wistful sigh*

Have you ever been to BAScon? That's in SF too (Nov. 7-9) and it is slash friendly. I went one year and had a great time.

Thanks for the link. No, I've never even heard of this event. Unfortunately, the website doesn't seem to provide any information on what fandoms might actually be covered, and it looks a bit too expensive for me to go 'just because'. At any rate, I can't really afford to rent a hotel room for a few nights if there isn't at least one other person to share it with... so unless someone I know is going somewhere and wants me to join them, I will just stay home, I think. *sigh*

When I went, they had a lot of panels and meetings, most sci-fi/fantasy. I wish I could go again; I truly had a wonderful time. Unfortunately RL is being exceptionally weird and difficult. And sometimes it's better just to stay home. Hopefully next year will be better!

Thanks again. Some of the panels do look interesting... but mostly it's about various TV shows, many of which I never even heard of (I don't watch TV). So probably not the right type of event for me. But it's good to know that all and sundry slash fandoms are thriving all over creation.;) We're not so weird and lonely with our strange obsessions, after all.:P

It is. And it will get worse after everyone actually leaves. For now, the laid-off people are still there for at least another month or two (except for one person, who didn't waste any time and found a new job already). Some of them even work overtime (which makes sense, I guess, to let them save something extra before they lose their income - the rest of us will surely have to do overtime after they're gone, lol). And it feels like we are socially segregated or something. *cringes a little*
