Ohh.. the horror of a computer!meltdown.. GAH. It´s good to have a backup-plan for whenever it´s going to happen, so IMO you´re leagues ahead already! I always tell myself the importance of boy!scouting-preparations afterwards somehow. *g* Not too long ago I used to have a laptop breaking apart along with my denial!frustration *cuz it´s going to work soon again* (the screen died until I was using it with 1/6 of its usual size. That was only the screen!issue.. lol)
..a piece of junk that pretends to be a computer at this point. LOL Wow, congrats - I think I´ve never managed to keep a computer alive for 7 years actually. =D perhaps it´s teh prOn?
Don´t have any advices to give you on what to buy, since I pretty much rely on my brother to hang around in that jungle while I am always totally confused about all the new technology happening since last time I checked.
I don´t know about the States, but here the second hand market is quite big. Maybe you can look for a used computer? So many people change computer more frequently than toothbrush, so I´m almost certain you could find what you´re looking fo - to a much lower price but just as good as new..?
