The discipline of having to adhere to a limited number of words forces you to hone your message and become very selective about choosing exactly the right words. When it all comes together, it's such a sense of accomplishment!
I like your comparison to poetry. I think that's valid, it's almost a prose-poem format that lets you convey strong emotions in a short piece.
