Interesting note: I read in an old story that Michael Blake, the author of Dances With Wolves, actually lived with Viggo and Exene in Idaho during the writing. The book is dedicated to Exene.
But the story is that the book (and then the screenplay) were written with Viggo meant to be John Dunbar and Ex as Stands With a Fist. There was trouble getting financing, and finally the the production company brought Kevin Costner (then peaking, career-wise) in to make the sale. The rest is history.
