My theory as to what prompted the change is that her age made her aware of simple human limitations. I mean, she's in a very good shape for someone in her seventies - but still, she doesn't feel like a superwoman anymore, and can no longer have such high expectations from herself; and perhaps that has caused her to also go a little easier on other people.
Moreover, she is now working as a caregiver for a woman in her nineties, and the woman's husband is very demanding. He keeps ordering her around, complaining about everything she does, being ridiculously anal-retentive about the smallest things; and perhaps that has made her realize how it feels to be on the receiving end of such an attitude.;) Apparently no-one has dared to treat her quite like that before. It was usually she who did this to other people - without much clue about the impact. So, perhaps, there is a valuable lesson in that...:P
