what's unsettling to me is that i don't feel very confident at all that i would/will recognize it the next time i'm faced with it
Me neither. That's probably why I instinctively become extremely wary around people who display even the slightest resemblance to THAT person. Sometimes I think I'm sorta paranoid, looking for hidden meanings and/or warnings in their behavior.:/
