It's infuriating, isn't it, when management do ridiculous (and sometimes very cruel) things based on some daft theory that it will make things more efficient. Have been through that kind of reorganization myself, and can sympathize.

The silver lining I found was in fact that, in my case anyway, I got a bit more responsibility and a broader mandate for my job, and once I settled in that improved my own self-confidence. It's actually nice to be able to tell other people what they should be doing and to train others - makes you feel important. :-) I hope that eventually works for you too. Sounds like you get along well with your team, anyway, and that's half the battle.

Obnoxious, arrogant people. OMG. I'm with you on avoiding them as much as possible. When I *do* have to deal with them, I like to remind myself that most obnoxious arrogance is actually severe insecurity being over-compensated (in a very unpleasant way). I doubt that it's true for every case, but it's a great way to help counter your own feelings. ("You've just made me feel upset and humiliated and bullied - man, I feel sorry for you that you're such a creepy little worm inside that you think you have to act that way.") Sort of puts you back in the driver's seat a bit, even if only in your own mind. :-) It took me years to learn to do that, I must admit, and it's still better just not to have to deal with nasty people in the first place, I think...

Woah, long egotistical comment! Sorry FL! Sorry to hear about the hitch in the citizienship process, but I'm sure it'll turn out to be something minor and absurdly bureaucratic. And "Sebastian" is a lovely name. I would have been "Andrew".
