I have not been in an abusive partnership like that with an SO (although the one I had with a friend got somewhat ugly at the time we parted, but well...) But so much of what you describe reminds me of my troubles with one of my sisters. It got better after I put distance between us, though. Then there was that woman I once knew and used to spend political activities with. To thins day, I have a hard time to understand why I put up with her unending criticism and destabilizing comments. And don't get me started on my father...
