So I ordered the Sehnsucht CD after all. It was about $25 with shipping - but it's worth every penny, and then some. Actually, this album was released in two slightly different editions: the one I had downloaded from the net is the 'regular' one, and the one I have on CD includes several 'special versions'. So I have the full collection now.:)
Anyway... the CD artwork is mindblowingly gorgeous, and the lyrics pack quite a punch too. Thankfully, the booklet includes English translations of all the German lyrics (as well as the German translations of all the English ones) - they have been doing this since the beginning, as far as I know (the earliest album I have on CD is from 1993, and it does include translations). So I can share my favorites here without having to mangle them through the Google translator.:D Btw, just like the music and the artwork, the translations have also steadily improved over the years, and are now quite good (the artwork was always good, now it's excellent; the music was always way beyond good, now it's beyond words, thank you very much).

Stunning, isn't it?... *gapes*
And now, the lyrics to Feuer - the most explosive track on the album. This song really IS fire - it's emotional 'kick' is apparent even without understanding the lyrics... but when I first glanced at the English translation, I went ahhh! NOW I see... LOL.
This is your first and your last victory
That I sacrifice my time - that I wrote this
But time is a whore - gives herself in haste
I have long gorged on my hatred of you
This is your time - this is your time - to burn
This is my time - this is my time
To burn you
One day you will be in this dark place
I will send you fire and listen to your screams
My sympathy I save for those who deserve it
Yes - arrogance is a lonely place
Your glass is not half full and no -
Your glass is not half empty
You have nothing but this water spot
Where your glass once stood
The time has come - time once again
This is now the time - it is time
This is your time - this is your time - to burn
This is my time - this is my time
To burn you
Your ignorance - your smugness
Your superiority - your egoism implodes
One day you will be in this dark place
I will send you fire and listen to your screams
Wow. Poor Tilo. Some woman must have really fucked him over.:P Talk about therapy through art. Transforming your pain into beauty and all that. Lacrimosa is a perfect example of bringing that principle to life. Anyone can whinge about how terribly unhappy they are - but to do it in a way that makes other people go, shit! this just rocks!, is a whole another matter.:D

Speaking of which - here is another song that simply deals a blow to the heart. Die Taube ("The Dove"). This is the emotional peak of the album - starting out very quiet and lyrical, gradually progressing to a dramatic crescendo. Musically, this is Lacrimosa at its best. A true classic.
You never knew your father
Your mother was like a dove
She flew from branch to branch -
Like Noah's spy
In the midst of the floods of human activity
Always on the lookout for safe land
Hold me - hold me - hold me oh so tight!
Thus strangers became enemies
How they reached out for the dove
And the dove let herself be caught
Hold me - hold me - hold me oh so tight!
With the suitcase standing in the door
A new town in the sunset
A new bed - a new motel
Hold me - hold me - hold me oh so tight!
She never spoke of your father
Only on this one night
As if through lips kissed sore
And with a look of horror on her face
She fell through the door and breathed:
Hold me tight
That town was stranger -
That night louder than before
She was alone
Distraught in tears she hid her face from me
The stranger knocked and the enemy entered
I saw the outstretched hand
And the dove sick with fear
And I hit out and I hit out
And I hit out with all my strength
And I hit out at bones
And I hit through to the brain -
The years have come and gone
I have not seen my mother
Since that night
A roof over my head -
A bed of my own
And I love my wife
And I kiss my son
For all the love
That now surrounds me
I'll never forget
The blood I shed
And the dying man
Who said to me:
I am back my son
Hold me - hold me!

Yeah. *savors the chill running down her spine for a few moments* I can't help wondering why he starts out telling the story in the second person, and then suddenly switches to the first - it must be deliberate, of course, but it still doesn't answer the question of just how personal the story really is. Not that it should - the artist deserves some privacy, no matter how exhibitionistic he chooses to be in his creation. Just saying.
And just one more - to wind down a little. This one is short and sweet - and an absolutely perfect Valentine's Day song for someone like yours truly. Call Me with the Voice of Love:
I saw you with the flowers
They weren't meant for me - no
I saw you at the corner
You did not turn to me
For my heart is begging:
Call me -
Call me with the voice of love
Hold me -
Hold me in the arms of faith
You were the first - you were the last
I ever opened my heart to
Now you seem so far away
Come back and stay
For I say:
Call me -
Call me with the voice of love
Hold me -
Hold me in the arms of faith
Lead me -
Lead me to the gates of tenderness
Feel me -
Feel me as I feel for you
