I have seen another heartbreaking movie. Without Conscience by Stefano Reali (yes, I usually choose films labelled as "foreign"; I have to have a really good reason to watch an American flick - like Viggo, for example ;). It's a frighteningly believable story about illegal human traffic and other kinds of related crime going on in the Balkan area. It kicked me right in the gut with the power of a classic Greek tragedy. I am a complete sucker for scenarios where the protagonist is somehow damaged (physically or mentally) by the cruelty of others, yet manages to overcome that and show his inner goodness and humanity. Tales like that make me weep like a baby. So do those where women and children are treated like cattle. And this particular movie has it all in frightful abundance. It also has glimpses of humor that somehow underline the general hopelessness and feeling of descending into circle after circle of hell. Stunningly real. No clear distinction between "good" and "bad" people here - just various degrees of success in dispensing with one's conscience in order to survive...
