Nov. 30th, 2006 11:27 pmHello, people. Apparently I cannot stay away from you for more than a few days.;)
My new job is a breeze. I am part of a team working on updating huge publication catalogs called the International Media Guides. There are five thick volumes issued each year, listing thousands of newspapers & magazines from all around the globe. We put in publishers' addresses, contact info, profile description, advertising rates etc. It may seem like mindless data entry at first glance, but it does take some figuring out at times to extract all the necessary information from the promotional flyers we receive - and it definitely helps to know more than one language.:) Which makes it a perfect job for me, in a way.
As for the so called stress level, so far there is none. The atmosphere in the office is extremely relaxed, with people chatting leisurely all the time, and everyone dresses about as casually as they can, short of coming to work in their pajamas (I wonder what they wear on their "casual days"... lol). No buttoned-up executive freaks whatsoever.;) Well, the boss is a rather neat elderly lady, but she's not the type that makes her employees nervous. Not at all. Actually, she took me out to lunch on my first day, and even though we were gone for about an hour and a half, she told me to put only a 30-minute lunch-break on my time-sheet.:) She also said she doesn't care how long my training takes, and wants me to take all the time I need for practice, until I feel totally comfortable with every aspect of the job. So right now all I'm doing is entering fictional information into the training system java screens. And the crazy geeky guy in the next cubicle keeps me amused by inventing creative newspaper titles like "Drowning Fish" (sic!) or telling me to put in Denzel Washington as the Advertising Manager.:D That is, when he is not completely mesmerized by his iPod.;) (btw, I am SO getting one too, as soon as my training is over and I don't have to listen to people explaining things to me all the time :D)
On the downside, the building has no cafeteria, and the only place close enough to make it during a half-hour break is MacDonalds.:( Which means I have to either fix my own lunch at home, which takes precious time, or buy and ingest some processed shit (which is a serious health hazard).:/ And also, quite predictably, I am not getting enough sleep. Even if I go to bed before midnight (which I mostly did this week), I usually wake up after 4-5 hours and then just toss and turn until it's time to get up. And I know that if I didn't have to get up early, I would eventually fall back asleep for another 2-3 hours and be just fine. I need to do something about that - I just haven't managed to figure out what. Because if it keeps happening, then the nasty migraines from hell are just around the corner.:(
Speaking of which - I need to finish this post NOW and scamper off to bed. *sigh*
