oh wait, there's more :/

Guess what? Yesterday I received another letter from the city, regarding the aforementioned parking ticket (which the guy who bought my car had assured me he was going to pay). They explained to me that if I sold the car without removing its license plates, which were registered in my name, I might still be liable for any violations - UNLESS I can provide sufficient documentation of vehicle transfer.:/ Which, of course, I cannot provide, because I do not have it. The new owner does, but he (surprise, surprise!) ignored my request to send me a copy.:/ So I paid the damned ticket. It was only fifty bucks, after all. Which is probably nothing compared to what I MIGHT have to pay if they fine me due to the impound. I just wanted at least one part of this whole circus to be over.:/ I wasn't about to wait till they double the amount - which they were going to do, if the ticket remained unpaid past a certain date. I don't think there is any point in trying to contact the new owner anymore - he isn't going to respond, and even if he does, I have no reason on earth to trust anything he might say. What makes me feel a little better, though, is the fact that when the car was impounded, it already had different license plates - not the ones I used. So, hopefully, that means I am not liable for the "unlawful drugs in vehicle" thing. But I don't really know. I wish someone had told me to revoke my license plates right after I sold the car, though. Maybe if I had done that, I would have avoided the entire mess. But I had no idea that it should be done. I thought the new owner would register the car in his name, and then my old plates would automatically become invalid. Of course, that expectation was based on my totally arbitrary assumption that he was an honest guy. I don't think I can afford (quite literally) to be making that assumption anymore.:/
The sad thing is, if they told me I can forget about the whole thing as long as I pay a fine, and if that fine was an amount I could afford - say, within a thousand dollars - I would probably happily pay it, just to avoid being dragged to a courthouse and losing any more sleep over this. I hate stupidly throwing money away - but still... it's only money, and my peace of mind is more valuable to me. I can't undo the mistakes I already made - but if I could somehow stop this nightmare from dragging on and on, I would do it. Which probably makes me a very easy target for all sorts of financial blackmail - since I am willing to pay people just so they would leave me alone. Interesting observation, that. *joyless smirk*

Date: 2011-07-17 10:41 am (UTC)I hope you can get out of the mess without having to pay any fine. When my old car brought down years ago and I sold it to a shop which wanted to either repair it of use the inlets, I took a months to revoke the license plates, either. The transaction of the car was done with a simple piece of paper - they had to sign me that I left the car to them and they would put it out of business. But in light of the mess you are going through, it seems that I have been very lucky that they, at least, proved to be honest and did not cause an accident or something until I had the license plates revoked. :(
*sympathy and hugs to you*

Date: 2011-07-17 08:43 pm (UTC)Yep.:/ But what annoys me most about the whole thing is that he had emailed me saying not to worry - that he was going to pay the ticket, even though he obviously had no intention to do so. If I hadn't written to the city explaining the situation, but instead just assumed he would take care of it, I might have ended up having to pay double (or more) in the end.:(
And that is only part of the whole problem. The impound situation is much worse.:/
You know, the funny thing is, I never suspected him of any devious intentions, because he looked so young. It seems I have forgotten about the existence of the phrase "juvenile offender".:/
