confusing what is real :)

Well, a few more things before the weekend's over. The next week will be more of the same at work, so I may not feel particularly chatty in the evenings. Just saying.
Also, I do recall wishing someone had written a story that would include "missing scenes" from Interview with the Vampire. Well... someone did. I am reading it right now. It's a multi-chapter saga that's basically a re-write of the novel from Lestat's point of view. One reader said in a review that it's better than the original... and I am almost inclined to agree. It's flawlessly written, and both Lestat & Louis are perfectly in character. Which also means that there is much more angst than romance; in other words, not quite the steamy tale of passion I might have wished for... but it's just so brilliant and so true to canon that it leaves me gasping. Too bad it remains unfinished (last updated in 2008). But then it looks like another author has picked it up where the first one left off...
See what an amazing, incredible thing fandom is?... Characters created by one person assume a life of their own, existing forever in the minds of hundreds, endlessly enriched, explored and examined - but still remaining the same characters, easily recognizable no matter who writes them (needless to say, if they're not recognizable, then we're talking about badfic, and I'm not wasting my time discussing that). You may argue that this is fundamentally wrong due to copyright issues; but when the writing in question is that good, I can't bring myself to condemn it, no matter what. Is it wrong for an artist to create another version of a magnificent painting, highlighting different aspects of the scene?... I can't honestly put a hand over my heart and say that it is. I do see how the original author may be upset by it - but then again, that is the curse of a great imagination. You create something captivating enough, and it suddenly becomes its own entity, no longer bound exclusively to you... no longer under your control. This most certainly happened to Tolkien... and it also happened to Anne Rice, whether she likes it or not. And anyway, a lot of the fanfic I have read is better than a few of her latest novels. Again, just saying.
And before I sign off for the night, here's my latest music addiction. Linkin Park. Yes, I know. A bit of a departure for yours truly. I never quite expected to like something that even vaguely resembles rap... LOL. But here it is, and it seems perfectly attuned to my emotions of late. You know, acting all calm and collected at the office all day, while there is a veritable storm of insecurity and frustration raging inside... it feels more or less like what this song is about:
At any rate, it feels good to be expanding one's musical horizons.:) Not that there aren't a few absolutely gorgeous ballads on their latest album, Living Things. My favorite one is probably Roads Untraveled... but I couldn't find a video for it. Anyway... I'll shut up now, and go to bed at a reasonable hour for once. *yawns*
