Again, the weekend sort of ran away with me. But I've been extremely distracted. See, I am going through another massive mp3 download phase.:D It's almost like a sudden bout of crippling disease; I can go without purchasing any new music for months, but once I get started, I often end up discovering a dozen new bands/artists within a week, acquiring endless hours of downloads and basically just getting high on it all, to the point of teenage-like giddiness and prancing ridiculously around the room. *headshake* It's a good thing Soundike.com still sells mp3's for $0.15 per track.:) (Which is definitely one of the reasons behind my giddiness - there is practically no limit on how much music I can download at one go, LOL.) Btw, it all started with the promotion they had last weekend, where they temporarily lowered the price to $0.10 per track.:D Now they're back to $0.15, but I am on a roll, and I still have nearly 50 bucks in my account on there (the more money you load into it, the more extra credit they give you, so it really pays off to put in $50 or more at once, if you can afford it).
Anyway... my approach to music is sort of seasonal - by which I mean that what music I am in the mood for largely depends on the weather. For example, I tend to listen to mostly dark, heavy and/or melancholy stuff in the depths of winter. Or when it's raining, regardless of the season. Warm, sunny weather usually sends me looking for something lighter - not brainless pop, necessarily (though I'm not averse to it on occasion), but something a little more upbeat and, well... sunny.:) And since it looks like we might finally get a proper spring here (*knocks on wood*), I am on the hunt for a new spring/summer soundtrack.;) Voltaire, featured in my previous post, provides a perfect transition, since he so effortlessly switches between morbid/darkly gothy and lighthearted/humorous stuff. Actually, I'm thinking he might be a man for all seasons.;D But I found myself itching for a really groovy summer playlist - so I dug out some club/disco hits from the late nineties/early 2000's (when I still used to go dancing sometimes). Sentimental value, you know.;) And some of those happened to have a bit of an Oriental/Mediterranean flavor - which reminded me that there is really no better summer music than Greek music, in my world. Greek music epitomizes summer to me - even at its most melancholy, it's just sun-soaked and lazy and utterly perfect in every way.:) So I randomly searched for a few familiar names - and before I knew it, I was up to my ears in the massive discography of one of the most popular Greek singers: Charis Alexiou, whose career started sometime in the seventies. I've always loved her, but I only had a bunch of her songs on tape. And, of course, she has released dozens of albums over the years; and it looks like most of them are available on Soundike, at the rate of $0.15 per track. I am dizzy.:P But even before I found her, I was reminded of another Greek singer, who recorded a magical album with a Turkish composer many years ago. I only know about this because I randomly heard fragments of said album on the radio back in Poland, sometimes in the eighties. I managed to record a few snippets on tape (which I still have with me, btw, because those songs were, like, absolutely out of this world), but never thought I'd be able to find those long-forgotten treasures in digital form (I have searched for them before). But lo and behold - there they are. O_O And yes, repeat after me: at the rate of $0.15 per track.:D Interestingly, the original album came out in 1985 - but 25 years later the singer & composer in question recorded another one together, and this one contains new versions of some of the most beautiful songs from the first one. And yes, they're all mine. Mine forever... *faints*
Crap, I gotta go. It's past my official bedtime. I am not going to be remotely coherent at work tomorrow... *sigh*
