Did I mention summer in my previous post? Well, it's gone. Lasted about three days this time. Right now we're back to murky cold weather reminiscent of either early March or November. For the past three nights or so, the temperature has been dropping below 10C/50F. In light of this, you might want to ask whether my heating is back on. Um, no. It is the end of May, so of course not. And I have already put the fan in my kitchen window, right? Which means I can't even close it properly - unless I take the fan back out. Aaaarrrrrghhhhh. Btw, it's supposed to be hot again by next Tuesday. So I decided not to bother removing the fan and just quietly freeze to death instead.:/ Oh, I did take out my little electric heater, of course. I need it to warm up the bathroom before I can persuade myself to take any clothes off, LOL. I sleep in my thickest flannels & socks, with an extra blanket on top of my duvet. Today I cleaned the apartment, which was the perfect thing to do, since it kept me moving around for a few hours, and therefore I stayed warm. But now the chill is seeping right through the fleece jacket I'm wearing over my sweater.:/ Oh, the irony. With all those fans standing around. I usually postpone setting up all the fans until it gets REALLY hot - at which point it is VERY unlikely to get cold again. But the thing is, it WAS really hot. This sudden, massive temperature drop was nothing short of astounding. If I still had any doubts that there are no rules anymore when it comes to the weather, they're all gone now. "Seasons" are a mythical concept in this brave new world of climate change...:|

But that's not what I wanted to talk about tonight. My latest Netflix movie turned out to be absolutely stunning. It's called Cracks, and the story takes place at a girls' boarding school in England in 1934. I know - sounds like a cliche. But it is quite surprising, in a number of ways. The predictable lesbian drama takes a few unpredictable and quite sinister turns. Plus, the acting is superb. There is the seemingly glamorous and invincible young teacher, Miss G, played by Eva Green; she has her favorite pupil, a proud and assertive girl known as Di, who is quite the snotty brat in the beginning, and gets a kick out of ordering everyone else around. Then a new girl arrives: Fiamma, a mysterious aristocrat from Spain, who was apparently sent away from home due to having caused some sort of scandal. Miss G is very intrigued... and suddenly Di is no longer the coolest kid in class. So, of course, she plots revenge. Hell hath no fury like a teenage girl whose affections have been spurned. But as the story goes on, we realize that none of the three principal "dramatis personae" is quite what she seems. Which is, I suppose, what the title refers to: cracks, particularly, in the elaborate facade that Miss G is putting up for the benefit of her students. It's a very complex character to play - and Eva Green does it in a beautifully unsettling manner. But Juno Temple, the girl who plays Di, is just as good; she undergoes a profound change in the course of the story, and I believe the central theme of the entire film is that of her growing up. It's wonderfully done, and the pivotal scene between the two characters is one of those unforgettable cinematic moments that make you shiver just thinking about them. Oh, and the photography is gorgeous. Just a beautiful, darkly alluring gem of a film all around. I am going to watch it again before I send it back.:)

As an interesting piece of trivia: the director, Jordan Scott, is the daughter of Ridley Scott. Which probably explains why the film looks so flawless, on the production side, despite being her first full feature. The story was based on a novel by Sheila Kohler, whom I never heard of; but I am intrigued and will probably try to find the book, or at least a Nook version of it (btw, my poor Nook still languishes half-forgotten on a shelf somewhere; I should start using it at some point, non?...;).

And that's all my news for today. It's late, and freezing, and I need to burrow under the duvet.;)

But here's a shot of Eva Green as the deceptively charming Miss G:

I feel you on the weather thing ... we turned on the heating again on Wednesday as it's just been too cold. We're lucky to get 10° during the day and I don't think it's stopped raining once today ... *sigh*

The film sounds interesting - I'll have to check it out. That or the book ...

I am definitely getting this film. It sounds so interesting. ::makes notes::

Someday, it will get hot again. Very hot. Then we will need the fans going full blast. As for right now though, ugh!
