I just found out that
matan4il lost a friend to sudden death today. And she is asking all who read her journal to appreciate the friends and loved ones we still have, as opposed to taking them for granted. Because we never know when they might suddenly disappear from our life, for one reason or another. So I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude for all the friendships that passed the test of time. I have been lucky so far in that no one I truly cared about has ever died a sudden and tragic death... but I have lost many who meant a lot to me through simple neglect and gradual 'drifting away'. Sometimes it was their fault, sometimes mine. And, in a way, it can be even more painful to know that a person you care about chooses not to maintain that connection, not because they are no longer a part of this world, but because they no longer care. So I would like to hereby promise myself to pay more attention to those who are still with me, and make sure I am not the one to blame if they slip away...
I had my annual review at work today. To my genuine surprise, my boss seems to think I have made great progress and even 'exceeded expectations' in some categories. Though, predictably enough, she wouldn't mind if I sacrificed some of my extraordinary attention to detail for the sake of speeding up just a bit.;) But, on the whole, she is quite pleased with me, and I am getting a 2% raise. Not sure yet how it will translate to the bi-weekly paycheck amount (I am clueless at calculating stuff like that), but a raise is a raise, and it is always better than lack thereof.:) That's my story, anyway, and I'm sticking to it.;) Of course, there are changes within the company all the time, and some people are very sceptical about our job security in the long run - but I have decided not to worry about crossing that bridge until I come to it. I like where I am for the time being, and see no reason to jump ship before it's even started sinking, so to speak. Maybe I'm being naive... but the sad truth is that it probably won't be any different wherever else I go. Long-term job security is a thing of the past, basically - whether we like it or not. So my attitude is to stick to one workplace for as long as they let me, because the longer I manage to stay there, the better it looks on a resume. Plus, I like the people I work with, and that is SO not a given. Therefore I am going to enjoy the ride while it lasts, and appreciate the nice atmosphere - even if the money is barely enough to afford a cheap rented studio and high-speed internet. Call me a minimalist if you please.:P
Oh, and one more thing: Viggo at the Oscars, brandishing his San Lorenzo flag and wrapping it around Cate Blanchett's pregnant belly. Just... priceless. What does it matter if he did not win? He is the best anyway.:D
