I didn't see that one coming, I guess

Welcome to Confusion Central, again. As of this week, I am being trained in a completely different section of our products than what I have been doing since I started this job, over a year & a half ago. Why?... Shoot me if I know. All I know is that it would make absolutely no sense for it to be happening now if were to get laid off within the next month or so. But then, who says that everything - or anything - at my workplace has to make sense? My boss has been known to insist on things that seemed basically pointless to some other people, including myself. But then, those were usually little, insignificant things, not worth getting upset about. While having someone take hours out of their daily schedule to learn doing something they might only be able to apply for the next few weeks of their life would be downright stupid. So, I am incredibly tempted to interpret this in a different way. And my current theory is as follows: either my boss already KNOWS that I am one of those people who are NOT going to get laid off (very unlikely), OR the ultimate decisions on that have not been made yet, and she is trying to influence those decisions by increasing the qualifications of the employees she would like to keep (seeing as I am not the only one who is currently being trained on something new). In which case, I STILL might get laid off, because no matter how much my boss likes me, she certainly doesn't have the final word on this. It's all up to the higher-ups - the faceless and cruel corporate gods who see the world through flashing dollar signs. So let me just say one thing here: if I DO get laid off after all this training (which is specific to our database and doesn't increase my qualifications for any other job I might have later on), it will be like a most resounding slap in the face. Not that it'll surprise me. As for my boss, I do like her too, despite her being annoying sometimes - but I'm very afraid that in this case, by trying to make things better, she's making them worse instead.:/
