This is what happened last night on my street, two houses down from where I live:

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=6634500&rss=rss-wls-article-6634500

My building is just outside the picture to the right - actually, you can see it briefly if you watch the video. It's the bigger yellow building behind the three identical red ones. My front windows look out on the backs of those other buildings, and I could see part of the scene after the commotion outside woke me up. By then the fire had already been extinguished, so all I saw was a massive cloud of smoke coming out of a top floor window. And a group of firemen/policemen moving about. And an ambulance with a stretcher covered in a white sheet. It was surreal. I would probably think I was having a weird nightmare, if I couldn't smell the smoke. In fact, the fire must have started before I turned in for the night, because I remember wondering why my throat suddenly felt so dry. But I was too exhausted to think of possible implications, so I just drank some water and tumbled into bed. Only to wake up an hour later with a vague sense of unease and dread. Still, I didn't see much when I looked out the window, so I thought it was just a small fire in one of the top floor apartments, most likely a result of someone's neglect. Until I walked out this morning and saw the boarded up windows, the fire trucks still all over the place and the reporters filming the entire scene. I still can't believe that a bunch of jerks actually deliberately set fire to the staircase. Who in their right mind does something like that??? And what if those jerks are still around the neighborhood, planning their next lethal prank?...

It could have been my building. It still CAN be my building next time something like that happens. I am on the third floor, and both the front and the back staircase are very narrow. With wooden railings. If some brainless, heartless excuse for a human being decides to have a bonfire on the stairs, I am not likely to get out alive. And it's rather difficult to imagine a more horrible death... *freaks out*

Damn. ::shakes head:: Big cities have very little heart. You might want to check out this link from Detroit (also incredibly depressing and sad):

I found this over at [community profile] abandonedplaces; if the link doesn't work, look up the entries for the 29th. :(

Yeah, that was pretty chilling.:( But still, that guy was already dead when they found him, so it's not like someone could have helped him by calling the police right away. Here someone actually set the building on fire, knowing there were sleeping people inside. Knowing that the burning staircase will prevent them from getting out safely. It just boggles my brain. I don't know what would be a more disturbing explanation: a random urge to destroy, or some twisted act of revenge against someone who lived in that building. *wants to find out, and yet doesn't*

I know what you mean but I think I'd want to find out, one way or the other.

The *really* scary thing is that it might have been someone who lost their job (which has been happening more and more lately.)

*hugs* My heart goes out to the family of those who perished in this tragedy. Try not to dwell on the savage stupidity that set the blaze. You'll go crazy. *more hugs*
