I wanted to make a longer post tonight, but somehow it didn't materialize. Whenever I seem unable to decide what to write about, there probably isn't much of anything worth writing about. *sigh* Shopping trips? Crowded malls? Maddeningly inane "Christmas" music played at every store I walked into?... Blllerrrghhh. I'm not gonna waste any time or space elaborating on that. Instead, as a form of detox, let me share this video. One of my favorite songs by Anathema. With lyrics.

THIS is music, people. In case anyone thought otherwise.:P And one more Anathema vid with lyrics - just because the background image takes my breath away.

Why yes, I am feeling emo. For no apparent reason, in case you're wondering. *shrug*

wow. a simple mistake is truly a piece of art.

It's so funny that I've always had about 8 Anathema CDs from my friend on my hard disk but over the years I only listened to Judgement... I used to indulge in such dark and hopeless climates like in the second song you posted. I no longer listen to that kind of music, but when I play it, like today, it still gives me goosebumps. Even if I am so happy nowadays it wakes in me feeling of deep nostalgy and sadness inside... What music!

edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hH1zutgUGk This still makes me cry.

To me, that sort of music isn't necessarily an indication of a dark and hopeless mood. I mean, obviously people who create it must have had some sad or painful experiences to deal with - but the pain has been transformed into something beautiful, and true beauty never really brings me down. It elevates me. It feels cathartic to empathize with someone else's pain through art... it is as though, because of the beauty that arose out of it, the pain had not been for nothing. I like to think that the saddest songs in the world are a form of autotherapy for their authors, as well as for their listeners. They certainly have fulfilled that function for me on countless occasions...

Yes, Parisienne Moonlight can trigger powerful emotions. I'm not quite sure yet what my favorite Anathema song is, since I have downloaded about 60 of them, and still haven't had a chance to listen to the entire playlist more than 2-3 times... but Flying and Closer are definitely in the top ten, along with A Simple Mistake. Btw, while the early albums are pretty dark (with suicidal themes, particularly on Eternity), in recent years the band's creative energy seems to have turned towards serenity and hope. I like to think that their discography documents a musical journey of healing...

Anyway - sorry for the long ramble, but it seems no one else on my flist is a fellow Anathema fan.;)

I don't mind your ramble, it was interesting to read. This entry of yours made me dig out the old bands I used to listen... like My Dying Bride, Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Draconian, The Gathering, Lacuna Coil, Darkwell, Beseech, Leaves' Eyes, Mortal Love, even Rammstein LOL.

Here were my fave songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ5J8hV7_Ro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKKA-CyE0Q4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GP1YAYGTrs0&feature=related

Haha!... I was just downloading Rammstein the other day.:D

I have one album by Lacuna Coil, and I'm familiar with the names of some of the other bands you mention... but I never really exlored them in any depth. Perhaps now is the time to remedy that.;)
