I seriously hope Viggo's having more fun than I am right now ;)

Firstly, HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY TO MY FAVORITE MAN.:D

Here is a little piscpam to celebrate a quarter century of great acting - I don't have good pictures of all my favorite roles, but I tried to pick ones that show some of the more striking incarnations he has assumed over the years...

A few more under the cut. )

Secondly, I didn't go to see my parents this weekend after all. I came down with a nasty cold on Saturday night, and have spent most of the time since then in bed. Read more... )

eee... what?

I've been sitting here for over an hour, trying to formulate my thoughts and make a coherent post, but my brain feels so disconnected. I don't know what I really want to say. I don't know if any of it really matters.

In a way, I can't believe I am already back from my long-awaited vacation. I still feel like I haven't taken a deep breath for months.:/

I am still struggling to catch up on LJ, especially all the new fiction posted in honor of Viggo's upcoming birthday. There is so much I want to comment on... and yet somehow I get more behind each day. I don't know where to start.

Viggo looks incredibly young on the new pictures from Denmark. Must be the refreshing lack of facial hair.:P I can't believe I might see him live like this less than two weeks from now. But then again, I might not, because I somehow doubt my ability to stand and wait around outside for a few hours in temperatures below 50F/10C. Early September in Toronto is one thing, but late October in Chicago is quite another...

I watched Appaloosa again. Still hate Renee Zellweger, I'm afraid. But Viggo & Ed are both perfect. And so is Ariadna Gil. She's absolutely hot, btw. As some people reading this journal might know, I have mixed feelings about het in general - but I'll take Viggo & Ariadna anytime.;P

This weekend is already over before it started - I work tomorrow (doing overtime again), then have to cook, because there won't be time for it on Sunday (need to visit my parents & do a month's load of laundry). And then there will be another 6-day week of trying to catch up on stuff and failing miserably. *weary sigh*

memes are irresistible, aren't they?...;)

I was tagged by [personal profile] taelyn_sass.

Here's how it works:
Each person starts with ten random facts/habits about themselves.
Those that are tagged need to write on their own LJ about their ten things and post these rules.
At the end of your entry, you need to choose ten people to get tagged and list their names.

My ten confessions. )

As for the tagging, it's been a bit of a challenge to pick ten people on my flist who are actually likely to read this or want to play... but here goes: [personal profile] alliwantisanelf, [personal profile] gairid, [profile] helynhighwater, [personal profile] matan4il, [personal profile] mellacita, [personal profile] rainweaver13, [personal profile] romi, [personal profile] stormatdusk, [personal profile] surreysmum and [personal profile] vamp_ress. in case you thought I was dead or something ;)

Okay... where do I start???... *takes a deep breath*

For the benefit of anyone who might care, or could possibly have been wondering about my atypical silence, here's the explanation: MY INTERNET CONNECTION DIED FOR TWO WEEKS. Yes, that's right. Two weeks. For no apparent reason. Read more... )

But, as fate would have it, those past two weeks have been quite eventful, and I probably would have been posting like crazy if I could... so now trying to squeeze it all into a single entry (because I don't know when I'm gonna have time for another one) seems like quite the challenge. I guess I'll just briefly point out the highlights, so to speak.

1) I spent last weekend at the [profile] texas_retreat. It was lots of fun, and I am amazed at how much effort the organizers of this event put into making it a great, memorable experience for us all. Read more... )

2) Watching Appaloosa was a delightful experience in itself, as well - except for Renee Zellweger's character, who simply didn't sit well with me, from start to finish. I wouldn't go as far as to say that she ruined the movie for me... but I found her intensely annoying. I'm glad she wasn't Viggo's love interest. *shudder* I wasn't too thrilled by the ending, either... but that's all I'm gonna say for now. No spoilers.:P

3) On October 29th Viggo will be in Chicago for the Good premiere at Chicago Film Festival!!!!! I was lucky enough to grab a ticket for the event soon after they came on sale, and I fully intend to take the day off, team up with [profile] akashaelfwitch and do some stalking.;P

4) Two days before that, on the 27th, I am scheduled for my citizenship exam (!!!). Read more... )

5) There were so many LJ posts I meant to respond to, and so many emails I meant to write, before I lost my internet connection that I seriously don't know where to begin. I will certainly try to catch up as best I can, but there is no telling now long it might take (my vacation is almost over, it's back to work on Monday, and for all I know, I'll probably be trying hard to keep sane until sometime in November... lol). So if you don't see a comment from me where you would normally expect to see it - or if you see one a week or two after you posted something - please don't think I've been ignoring you on purpose. I'll get there, hopefully, at some point. It's just that this is probably the craziest fall season of my (so far) relatively uneventful existence... *wipes brow*

and now for something completely different

Okay... here is a question to anyone on my flist who feels inclined to discuss a controversial topic. What is your reaction to the sight of two teenage boys making out? And by 'teenage' I do not mean over 18 - since I'm pretty sure I know how almost everyone on my flist would react to that.:P I mean barely teenage - as in somewhere around 13, perhaps. In other words, clearly below the age of consent by even the most liberal standards.Read more... )

quick RL update

So, last Saturday it rained. And rained. And rained. And then rained some more. And by Sunday there were flooded streets (including some major roads) all over Chicago. Which, of course, entailed some necessary detours and basically insane traffic chaos in every direction. I went to see my parents on Sunday afternoon, and when I came back, nearly every street in my area was blocked off by the police. I almost drove back the 42 miles to my parents' house to spend the night, since the possibility of finding a legal parking spot within walking distance of my building seemed like way too much to hope for. Finally I 'got lucky', but by then it was almost midnight, and the whole situation made me very tense - so of course I didn't get much sleep that night. Not a good start to the week. *sigh*

Also, my internet connection went dead for about three days. It only came back last night, so I'm still playing catch-up on email, flist and such (I was able to check my email at work, but I didn't even try to access LJ or open some 'more interesting' attachments due to complete lack of privacy at my cubicle ;).

In addition to this, work is crazy busy right now - I am being trained in YET ANOTHER new section of our products, as well as doing about five different 'urgent' projects at the same time (just trying to decide what to do first is becoming a challenge, lol). It's going to be like this at least till the end of September - and then, after I get back from my early October vacation, it's gonna be crazy again for the next 2-3 weeks or so. After that it may slow down a bit, but it's really not a given, since all the people who have been laid off will be actually leaving, so all the work they are doing right now will fall on the rest of us who stay. Btw, I'll be working 5 hours this coming Saturday. And I already feel as tired as I usually do on Fridays. So... forgive me if my posts in the near future are either non-existant or decidedly uninspiring.;) I'm just trying to stay afloat, so to speak (I know, bad joke, considering the fact that some people's houses were actually flooded... but somehow I find dark, morbid humor particularly appealing at the moment :|).

this and that

So I went to work on Saturday. It felt extremely weird to be there, but, fortunately for my sanity, I wasn't the only one, and the three hours passed very quickly. I think I can handle it every once in a while.;)

Also, a quick culinary note to myself: after making a salad dressing that contains yogurt/mayonnaise etc. (AND lemon juice as well), it is REALLY a good idea to store it separately and only mix with the salad right before eating. Otherwise the salad just might get a little bit... less exciting the next day.;)
And while I'm on this topic, let me just say I'm NOT going to try any recipe that involves tofu ever again. Blargh. I might be slightly obsessed with eating healthy at the moment, but I do have my limits... lol. Plus, the mushrooms & the delicious Sichuan sauce (which, unfortunately, didn't impart any flavor to the tasteless, colorless lumps) would go just as well with chicken, I'm sure.:D

And while I'm here, let me recommend a sweet (despite being rather heavy on the angst) Asian/American movie called Ethan Mao. Read more... )

EDIT: I forgot to mention that yesterday my scale showed 134 lbs. That's the lowest since... I don't know, sometime around 2003 or 2004, I suppose. As well as almost 30 lbs down since last summer. Wow. Looks like I really did it. I am, in fact, genuinely impressed with myself - and let me tell you, that doesn't happen very often.:P

news digest ;)

News Item No.1: Vacation problem solved. There is a Slashy Retreat in Texas in October ([profile] texas_retreat). I almost forgot about it, then thought it was already too late to sign up... but it wasn't. All booked now, including the plane ticket. Definitely cheaper than the Yaoi Con in San Francisco would have been.:) Plus, I'll get to meet some famous ladies from the Adult_Viggo Yahoo!Group.:P

News Item No.2: I got the fingerprint notice for my citizenship application already. I only sent the application about three weeks ago. The website said you normally wait 9-12 months to hear back from them after they file your case. OMG WTF???... Unless I misunderstood the instructions and it meant that the waiting period starts AFTER they take your fingerprints. Since they apparently need them checked out by the FBI before they can process your application. You know, just in case you're a dangerous terrorist or something. *headshake*

News Item No.3: The boss wants me to do 3 hours of overtime each week in September - including this current week. And she tells me this on Wednesday. )

random ramblings

Dyed my hair today. Probably the deepest flaming copper it's ever been. Ruined two towels and made a mess of the bathroom, but it was worth it.:P Now all I need is a facelift, and I can pretend I'm 25 again.;D

Here's a picture - it doesn't do justice to the color, but I couldn't resist anyway.;) )

In other news, I finally saw a chiropractor last weekend (which I probably should have done years ago), and she said my upper back was knotted up as all hell (not in those words exactly, but you know ;), and it would take quite a few visits to loosen it up to a comfortable level. So it's definitely a good thing I still have my health insurance. *nods*

In more irrelevant news, I am very happy with my Netflix subscription. They have a huge selection of foreign/independent films, and the DVD's actually get here, usually a day or two after the email announcing that they have been shipped. They don't get lost or stolen. Only once did I have to report a missing DVD, and it was replaced very quickly. I have seen many interesting movies in the past few months - some of them definitely deserve a post, but there likely wasn't either time or energy to make it. One I have to mention, though. The Kite Runner. An absolutely stunning tale of friendship and sacrifice, loyalty and betrayal, guilt and redemption, cruelty and kindness. It carries an uplifting message at the end, but gets very dark and disturbing on the way there - so keep a box of tissues handy if you plan on watching.;) Seriously, it will kick you in the gut if you are squeamish or tend to have intense emotional reactions to the sight of (however fictional) cruelty or injustice (like yours truly). But it is totally worth seeing nonetheless.

And that is all for tonight. *yawns*

survivor syndrome?...

I feel so weird. I still can't quite believe that I'm not getting laid off. Not only because I had anticipated it for a few months, but because they did lay off a few people I would never have imagined I could possibly be chosen over, so to speak. I mean, I know it's about money, just like I said before - but still... The entire 'data operations' department (of which we are part) was pretty much cut in half. We had another meeting yesterday, just for those who are being retained - and I was shocked at how few of us there were. We all looked sort of wide-eyed and deflated, and the HR lady told us that we are suffering from the 'survivor syndrome' - feeling guilty about still having a job while others don't. That pretty much sums it up, I think. *nods*

Besides, I'm still at a loss about what to do with my vacation. I don't really want to go anywhere just by myself, and since I didn't know what was going to happen, job-wise, I haven't been in touch with anyone regarding their travel plans and such. )

they are NOT laying me off - unless I haven't woken up this morning and am still dreaming, lol

Oh. My. God. What a day. The long-awaited Big Reveal finally took place. By which I mean our team meeting at work this morning. After a short introduction by the higher management everyone was called individually to talk to their respective boss about the impact of the current changes on their position. Since we were called in alphabetical order, almost everyone on our team went before me, and at least two people among those were laid off (one of whom has been with the company for at least 10 years). So imagine my utter astonishment when the boss anounced that I was being retained. I think my eyes went into saucer mode for a good long while there, lol. )

a certain Elf was feeling left out, it seems :)

I am pretty much in a state of shock at this point, considering the endless creative draught I've just emerged from... but here goes another one. Very short this time and a little unexpected, character-wise, but it needed to be written. Lord Elrond, who is a powerful behind-the-scenes presence in my 'twins universe' (*chuckles*), suddenly demanded that I give him a voice. And here is what he had to say.

my muses are back!!! omgyay!!!!! *dances wildly*

Life is certainly full of surprises, isn't it? This would seem like the worst time for writing, and yet... the muses chose to come back full force and grace me with this brand new little ficlet which practically wrote itself in the scant few hours between 10p.m. and 2a.m. last night. I don't normally stay up that late anymore, even on weekends - but I felt so exhilarated at finally being able to write again that I just had to finish. The funny thing is, I suspect that this sudden bout of inspiration might have been brought on by an anthology of erotic lesbian stories I am currently reading (you know, trying to find something I might want to translate for my publisher friend back in Poland). Don't ask me how or why that helps with writing m/m slash. I'm not sure I know.;P One thing I can definitely say is that in whatever I read or write (or translate, for that matter), I am primarily interested in feelings, emotions, the dynamics of relationships and human (or Elven in this case, lol) interaction - not in the mechanics of sex itself. That is a very secondary thing to me - and so is gender, basically, even though I do prefer exploring homosexual relationships to heterosexual ones (probably because they are simply closer to my personal experience and I feel more confident talking about them). And I am perfectly fine with PWP's - but they must be featuring either an established couple, or the beginnings of such (first time sex between people who feel very intensely about each other). Otherwise it's just a waste of time for me. Which could be one of the reasons why I'd much rather read fanfic than 'original' erotica where the characters often seem too anonymous (if there is little characterization and no 'back story', I simply don't understand why these two/three etc. people are having sex, or why I would want to know anything about it, and can't for the life of me get into it enough to actually feel turned on, even mentally - if you know what I'm talking about). But enough of the background philosophy for now - on with the fanfic.:) I hope it brings a smile to whoever choses to read it - as it has certainly done for me.:D

Title: Investigation
Author: Floating Leaf
Pairings: A/L, E/E/L (implied)
Rating: PG-13, I think
Summary: Legolas and the Twins have a talk.
Warnings: Complete sap and silliness.
Disclaimer: The characters belong to Tolkien, though he probably wouldn't recognize them by now.
Author's Notes: This little snippet immediately follows Pure Bliss. If you click on the 'my fiction' tag at the bottom of this post, you will see all the other ficlets taking place in the same universe, which include also Naughty Thoughts, Secret Mission and Closer Than Brothers (that last one is out of chronological order and does not need to be read to follow the storyline). Hopefully there will be more. *crosses fingers for her wayward muses' future cooperation*

Legolas stretched luxuriously, sighing in bliss as his pleasantly aching body savoured the memory of last night's activities. )

the circus rolls on

So, today the boss sent an email to everyone on the team, inquiring about our availability for overtime during the next three months - meaning September, October & November. WTF?... Of course, if they let some people go this fall, then those who stay will most likely have to do overtime - but since we haven't been told who's staying yet, it feels weird to have that question addressed to everyone. Unless there's been some change of plans we're completely unaware of. One thing I've heard is that once the new employees from India finish their training here next week, they will go back home to train others, and then come back here for more training. Which probably means that the lay-offs will not happen all at once, but gradually. So we might just as well work overtime now and still be gone by the end of the year. At least some of us, obviously.

Another thing a coworker suggested to me, though, is that the company would save more money by keeping some lower level employees (like me), instead of just the 'veterans' with higher pay. And there are people on our team who've been there forever and who must be making about twice as much as I am. So maybe that's why I was trained to do stuff someone else had done so far - because I'm cheaper?...

I just wish I knew, one way or the other. But judging by the latest developments, they might just as well keep at least some of us in the dark until the busy fall season is over, so we are well motivated to do our best in the hopes of not getting kicked out. Smart, innit?...:/

Your result for The How Well-Read Are You? Test...

Incredibly Well Read

Your level of Well-Readliness is 94 %!

*Applause* You. Are. Amazing. You may also be bothered by the fact that the first three sentences were not proper sentences at all but, rest easy now, the periods are there for emphasis. Also, I apologize for making this test to measure 'well-readliness' but nothing else would fit properly. Well, then. I could easily talk to you for hours. We could have a field day discussing Capote, Austen, Chaucer, Steinbeck, and Dickens, just to name a few. Chances are you really enjoy reading, which is wonderful in this day and age, and you either impress or annoy those around you with your vast knowledge of the best literature the world has to offer. Bravo, my friend. Bravo. Let's do tea sometime.

Eee... really?... *blinks* I didn't think so. I read a lot, but not necessarily 'only the best' or most famous authors. And I made a few intelligent guesses.;)

I suppose I'm lucky that this quiz is based almost exclusively on literature written in the English language, since that's what I studied at university. Otherwise I'd probably do rather poorly. Not that poring over Chaucer was any fun.:P

blech

I spent about 90 minutes in traffic on my way back from work today, because the lights at a major intersection were out, which resulted in a massive traffic jam stretching for miles. Then I spent another 90 minutes cooking. I've only just had my dinner, and it's almost 11 p.m. In fact, I should be getting ready for bed right now - but I need to wind down first with a cup of herbal tea. I am TIRED of living like this. Work has been crazy too, what with being trained, preparing to train others (the new employees from India) and doing all sorts of stupid extra projects for the boss on top of the regular daily grind. I just seriously need a break. And by that, I do not mean a two-day weekend that will be over in a blink. *sigh*
